Overview

The Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Environmental Assistance Office (EAO) and the Waste Management Division (WM) carry out the state waste reduction programs as outlined in the State Solid Waste Plan.

The Solid Waste Program oversees rules, policies, compliance, permits, and planning related to solid waste management in the state. The program also provides solid waste technical and grants to towns and solid waste districts.

The Environmental Assistance Office provides a non-regulatory focus, one of technical assistance and education. Division staff works with businesses, communities, state agencies, and others to identify effective and economical ways to reduce waste at the source or to recycle waste once it's generated in order to avoid waste treatment and disposal costs and to safeguard human health and the environment. EAO provides recognition to outstanding businesses through its Governor Awards and Business Environmental Program (BEP).
