Resource Recycling, January 2011
The State Electronics Challenge has gone nationwide as of Jan. 1. The program offers free technical assistance and resources to public entities – which includes everything from state universities to tribal governments - to help them take steps to green their operations, including recycling electronic equipment in an environmentally responsible way.
Initially a pilot program in 10 Northeast states that started in 2007, its most recent expansion comes with support from Samsung, ISRI, Panasonic, Sims Recycling Solutions and the Consumer Electronics Association. Prior to the most recent additions, SEC included 22 states, including several Rocky Mountain and Midwestern states. [The State Electronics Challenge is administered by the Northeast Recycling Council, Inc.]
So far, nearly 50 government entities – encompassing 60,000 employees – have signed on as Challenge Partners. During the first two full years of the program, 24 government entities purchased 16,000 green computers, as defined by EPEAT, and recycled over 17,500 units.
